The best thing about Sunshine Island Inn is the osprey nest high in a neighboring tree and the daily perch of an adult osprey on the telephone pole in front of the Inn with the 8 inch fish it caught and prepares to feed to the chicks. The day trips to Edison and Ford winter homes and the Ding Darling nature reserve were very worthwhile. We had good dinners at several local restaurants, but not "fine dining". It can turn a short drive into a much longer trip. The location is good for going places on Sanibel and Captiva - even the mainland, but beware of heavy slow traffic during daylight hours. The room is rated for four persons which would require two to sleep on "couches" in the living room, not convenient for anyone. Lighting for reading at night in the room is marginal. Beach access is via a narrow path across East Gulf Drive the beach itself is nice, but windy and cool conditions limited our use. Heating and cooling is via noisy window AC units. Furniture is all mismatched and OLD bathroom is 1950's vintage kitchen was marginally equipped, No carpet or throw rugs. The room was reasonably clean and ready when we arrived. Most of the time there is no management on site. They did let us stay later than the 10 am ("without exceptions") chdeck out time. Absentee management (Karen) and cleaner (Sean) were nice and somewhat helpful, but could not make up for all the shortcomings. Not much good to say about it other than it was affordable.
